Overview

Gauri Kedareshwar Mandir is one of the most significant and visually stunning temples in Varanasi (Kashi). Perched on the famous Kedar Ghat, this temple is often called the "Kedarnath of the Plains." It offers a slice of Himalayan spirituality right in the heart of Banaras. Whether you are a devout pilgrim or a curious traveler, this architectural marvel with its striking red-and-white striped steps is a must-visit.

History & Importance

The Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana gives this temple immense significance.

  • The Legend: It is believed that for those who cannot travel to the high Himalayas to visit the original Kedarnath temple, a visit to Gauri Kedareshwar in Kashi yields the same spiritual merit (punya).

  • The Guardian: Lord Kedareshwar is considered the guardian deity of the southern part of Varanasi (Kedar Khand).

  • Moksha: It is said that anyone who breathes their last in the Kedar Khand attains immediate liberation (Moksha).

How to Reach & Distance

The temple is located at Kedar Ghat, near the Sonarpura area.

  • By Boat (Recommended): The most scenic route. Take a boat from Dashashwamedh Ghat directly to the red-and-white striped steps of Kedar Ghat.

  • From Varanasi Cantt Station: ~5 km (20-30 mins by auto).

  • From Godowlia: ~1.5 km (Walkable).

  • Landmark: Ask for Sonarpura Crossing or "Bengali Tola."
