About the Festival
When the Gods Descend
Dev Deepawali, or the "Diwali of the Gods," is celebrated 15 days after Diwali on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik. It is a spectacle unlike any other, where the moonlit Ganges reflects the glow of a million earthen lamps.
Unlike the usual Diwali involves fireworks and family gatherings, Dev Deepawali is a community-driven spiritual outpouring. Every step of the 84 ghats, every temple, and every household in Varanasi is illuminated, turning the city into a floating paradise of light.
The Legend of Tripurasur
The mythology behind Dev Deepawali is rooted in the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasur. The demon had conquered the three worlds and created three flying cities. Lord Shiva, in his form as Tripurantaka, destroyed these cities with a single arrow.
Overjoyed by this restoration of cosmic balance, the Gods were said to have descended to Kashi (Varanasi) to celebrate the victory by bathing in the Ganga and lighting lamps. To this day, the earthly celebration mirrors this celestial jubilation.

Things to Remember
• Traffic Jams: The city comes to a standstill. Reach the Godowlia or Maidagin area by 3:00 PM to walk to the ghats comfortably.
